The Joy of Spinning
For those of you who are exercise buffs, you may thing that I am going to talk about the wonderful exhilaration I experience while riding a stationary bike in a class setting with wonderful music and a motivating spinning instructor. No, actually what I am going to talk about (or write about I guess) is what my friend Bob (names have been changed to protect the innocent) fondly call ‘spinning’. It is that ungodly chatter in our minds that take us down the spiral into the thought patterns of “Oh, my god I can’t believe this is happening to me again, and can you believe they did that, and this place is full of idiots and perhaps I am the biggest idiot of them all!” It’s the spinning, spinning, spinning of reliving an unpleasant experience, anticipating all of the future ramifications and getting caught up in the drama of it all. STOP!
I take a deep breath and remember to breathe in and breathe out, living in the present moment where the unpleasant experience does not currently exist and the future doesn’t currently matter. Ahhhh, peace again.
“But remember that unpleasant encounter with…” ,the unpleasant thoughts try to sneak in again. I slam the door shut in my mind to tell them to go away.
“But he fell asleep during your presentation…” STOP, I said go away. That is in the past and I can let it go.
“But she will attack you in your presentation tomorrow!” STOP!!! I will deal with things as they happen and not have anxiety over them today. Now go away once and for all.
Ahhhh, the joys of spinning. Don’t tell me that you don’t do it.
