We Can't All Be Heroes........Or Can We?

I was recently watching the CNN special on their selections for Heroes 2009 Ordinary People Extraordinary Impact and was truly inspired. I was not aware of this annual prestigious award which is decided by the combination of a panel for the top ten followed by public voting for the winner. The top ten include a school bus driver who has provided over 70,000 free meals in New York City, a woman who founded a mobile free mammography service to those without health insurance and a New Orleans citizen offering tutoring, instruments and music education to kids of the French Quarter in order to keep them off the streets, just to name a few. Pretty significant impact wouldn't you say?

After thinking to myself "That's great! Thank God for people like them, we can't all be heroes," I remembered a presentation I heard recently from a new friend of mine (Amber Maynard) entitled 'Simple, not easy'. During her presentation, Amber shared the questions she asks herself at the end of each day: "Did I make a difference in someone's life today? Did I help someone grow?"

I realized that this is really all it takes to be a hero and we really only need to be a hero to one person at a time. Simple. If we all see a way to help or contribute to others each and every day, this all feeds the positive impact we need in the world and we are all heroes to those that are the recipients of our efforts. In addition, there are numerous people in our lives who are our heroes as well. Simple.

My hero today was the Customer Service woman working at Home Depot. She was stressed, working hard without her dinner break (I know this because she politely informed her manager as he walked by her behind the service desk), and the sole employee waiting on a line of 5 people and growing. The customer in front of me was returning a water heater that he got as part of a package and he didn't have a receipt. This was going to take a while. After waiting a good 10 minutes, she politely asked the manager if he could help out and take a return. He was able to wait on me under her direction, all while she was simultaneously waiting on the water heater return. She never lost her cool and was just focused on the customer. I was grateful. My hero for the day, even though she didn't make the CNN list.

Who's your hero and how can you be a hero today?
