You Can Fly Too!

Last month, my husband and I were out to dinner at a beautiful restaurant overlooking the Sea of Cortez in Mexico.  The view was magnificent and we could see the ocean waves crashing on the beach through a clear glass wall which was about 5 feet tall and directly in front of our table.  I quickly noticed a large wasp in the lower left hand corner of the glass, trying desperately to find a way to get around the glass wall.  It would fly up a few inches, fly to the right a few inches, fly back down again, and it would keep repeating this pattern repeatedly.  I could feel the frustration.  I finally asked our waiter if he could help the poor thing out.  He quickly took a menu and guided the wasp up and over the wall so that it could fly freely away.  Instant relief.
I thought about how significant this observation was and how it related to my own life (and probably a lot of others as well).  How many times do we try to solve a problem over and over again doing the same things that never produce the results we desire?  Isn’t that the definition of insanity?  How often do we allow others to help us see a better way out?  How often do we ask others for their perspective so that we may see another point of view?  Do we trust that we’ll find the way or do we simply quit from exhaustion?
I am entering the final week of a 20 year career, and entering a new phase in my life with my soon to be full-time coaching business.  I think I’ve been the wasp for a while now, trying to find my way.  I’ve been trying to find a way of letting go of the safe, comfortable way of life and embracing a new, uncertain, challenging and exhilarating one.  I’ve had lots of help and support to find my way up and over the glass wall.  I’m now ready to spread the wings and fly off!  I hope you’ve found your way over the wall as well!
